For Modern Warfare 2 Infinity Ward has replaced the franchise’s traditional weapon unlock model. In the past, all guns were unlocked by reaching a specific level. For example, in Vanguard the BAR assault rifle is unlocked at level 18. However, Modern Warfare 2 introduces a new system that can take some getting used to. Here’s our guide on how to unlock weapons in the Modern Warfare 2 beta.

How to unlock weapons in the Modern Warfare 2 beta
Whilst unlocking weapons in past Call of Duty titles was based on your overall level this year that only applies to the base platform guns. The majority of weapons are instead unlocked by reaching specific weapon levels on specific weapons. Call of Duty fans should be familiar with weapon levels as they have been used in past titles to unlock attachments.
In Modern Warfare 2 gun levels are used to unlock both attachments and new guns. You need to use guns that share the same platform to unlock more guns that also use that platform. Weapon platforms can be confusing but all you need to know is that guns that share a platform also share attachment unlocks. If you unlock a sight on one gun in the M4 platform it will be available for all guns in the M4 platform.
You can figure out how to progress through a platform and unlock more guns by accessing the gunsmith interface in loadouts. Once in the gunsmith move over to the progression tab and you’ll be introduced to a technology tree of sorts. You’ll be shown the progression path for whatever platform you have selected. To unlock new guns you need to unlock the receiver attachments which use the base gun’s platform to create something new. Apply an unlocked receiver and your gun will be converted.
That’s how to unlock weapons in the Modern Warfare 2 beta. Just figure out what gun you want to unlock and work towards it by leveling up the other guns that lead to it. For instance, if you wanted the 556 Icarus LMG you’ll need to reach weapon level 18 on the M4. Be aware that unlock trees in the full game are likely to change as more content becomes available.
You can play the Modern Warfare 2 beta on either Battle.net or Steam.
