At long last, the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake has been revealed. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will launch in winter 2023, and is the second of what we now know to be a trilogy. The name of the third game is unknown. However, Square Enix confirmed during the FF VII showcase today that it’ll soon follow the second game.
As it’s a direct sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues the unexpected story changes brought by the remake. For fans of the original 1997 game, the Remake threw out some pretty shocking curveballs. I won’t go into the spoilers if you haven’t played the Remake yet. However, it’ll be a new journey starring Cloud and his misfit allies.
According to Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura, Rebirth is a game for both fans and newcomers. He even mentions that some new players may even want to try Rebirth first, suggesting quite the departure from the original Remake, storywise. What kind of surprises are in store? That’s for Nomura to know, and for you to find out in 2023.
“Cloud and his friends embark on a new journey in this game, and I believe that the scenes that they witness after leaving Midgar will give players a fresh, new experience,” Nomura stated in the press release. “I can’t wait to share the intention behind naming the first title, ‘REMAKE,’ and the second title, ‘REBIRTH.’”
What will be the name of the third game?
The Final Fantasy VII Remake sequel is still fairly far away. However, Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi said that it’s being made with “passion and dedication,” and will “be worth the wait.” It will be a long wait by the time it arrives. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has only been confirmed for the PlayStation 5. It’ll certainly be available for PC as well, but likely not at the same time.
The first part of the remake trilogy launched for PlayStation 4 in 2020. It eventually made its way to PC as FF7 Remake Intergrade late last year. Square Enix also announced today that the PC port is heading to Steam on June 17.
