You’ve made it to about the half-way point of the Elden Ring boss gauntlet. It kicked off with Sir Gideon Ofnir, who was really just the appetizer. But now, you’re onto the main course. Godfrey, First Elden Lord, aka Hoarah Loux, has returned in the flesh, and he stands as the second to last boss fight in Elden Ring. It’s been a tough ride, but stay firm — it’ll soon be over.

Elden Ring boss guide – How to beat Godfrey, First Elden Lord
Before facing Morgott, the Omen King, you got to dance with Godfrey’s glorious, golden avatar. If you recall the fight, then you’re already prepared. Well, mostly. Godfrey in his actual form is far more imposing, with a larger health pool. He dishes out a lot more damage as well, plus he now has a second phase. And then, things get really interesting. Before that, though, let’s talk phase 1.
Elden Ring Godfrey, First Elden Lord boss fight – phase 1
Godfrey’s attack pattern in phase 1 nearly mimic the fight you had with him before. He wields a massive ax, which he uses to swipe, as well as smash with an overhead attack. Godfrey again uses his Stomp, which sends out multiple stalagmites from the ground. He has a few new tricks, however, so stay on your toes.
- Melee attacks – Godfrey’s bread and butter. He uses his imposing ax to swipe, and will sometimes follow it up with one or two more attacks, or with a slow, overhead slam.
- Stomp – Godfrey stomps the ground, creating spikes that deal damage.
- The big stomp – Godfrey winds up a Stomp for several seconds, before crashing his foot down for an AoE attack that covers a large portion of the arena.
- Erupting fissure – This is probably the most terrifying of Godfrey’s new moves. He swings down his ax, causing a glowing “fissure” to trail vertically over the ground. In a couple seconds, it erupts, dealing a huge chunk of damage.
- Ax throw – He hurls his ax toward you before flying back to retrieve it.
Godfrey’s melee attacks come in multiple flavors. He’ll try and hit you once when close enough, or he can do a combo for up to three hits. A lot of the times, he’ll follow this up with an overhead attack. For the most part, you can dodge through just about all of these — including the ax throw — and come out unscathed. My suggestion is to roll into the swing each time, that way the ax doesn’t clip your hitbox on your roll recovery. Attack him once after the combo, or up to two times before the overhead swing — wash and repeat.
The regular Stomp can be avoided in two ways. You can either dodge roll just as it lands, or jump. The former is tricky, however, and you could get hit by it still if your timing is off. I suggest jumping during this move, and set up a jump attack while at it. The bigger stomp is scarier than it looks, trust me. Godfrey winds up for a long time, and it’ll likely make you anxious. However, like with the normal Stomp, you can jump it and land an attack once it’s over. Easy money.
The erupting fissure is far more difficult than his other moves. You can dodge the initial attack, but don’t stand around! Get out of that area as soon as you can, and you’ll be safe.
Godfrey moves slowly for the most part, so those who attack at range should do well. The only concern you’ll have is with his fissure attack and his charge. On the latter, Godfrey may dash forward while dragging his ax from behind before slicing it upward.
Elden Ring Godfrey, First Elden Lord boss fight – phase 2: Hoarah Loux, Warrior
Once you get Godfrey down to half health, he does something rather unfortunate to his lion friend. Afterward, bathed in blood, he becomes Hoarah Loux, WARRIOR! After you’re done giggling at his line delivery, get ready. This is going to be a tough fight. Hoarah Loux leaves the ax behind and goes full Wrestlemania on your ass. He’s fast, strong, and has a devastating grapple move that he can begin from a good distance away.
- Melee attacks – Hoarah Loux uses his hands as weapons. He’ll strike once, but can follow it up with a second attack. Often, after his second attack, he’ll use a powerful ground stomp or charge up for a multi-hit combo. At times, he’ll also kick.
- Combo charge – After charging his left hand back for a few seconds, Hoarah Loux will charge while unleashing a series of strikes.
- Stomp – Hoarah Loux will slam his foot down for a wide AoE attack. He’ll sometimes follow this up with an uppercut.
- Earthshaker – After holding his leg up for a few moments, Hoarah Loux stomps the ground for an incredibly wide AoE attack. He’ll usually follow this up with a second slam, using both his hands.
- The Power Bomb – This comes in two flavors. If close enough, Hoarah Loux will grab you, leap with your useless body in tow, and slam you down to the ground. He also has a version where he dashes at you first, so long as you’re within medium range.
- Grab and slam – Hoarah Loux will hold his right hand back before grabbing you and slam you onto the ground.
Hoarah Loux does a lot of damage, but, like with Godfrey, his attacks are slow. For the most part, you should be able to dodge his melee attacks, combo charge, grabs, and kick simply by dodge rolling. My suggestion is to dodge his attacks until he clearly pauses, hit him once (or twice if you’re speedy), and then prepare for the next move. He often pauses once he’s finished with a move. The combo charge, for example, hits seven times. Once that’s finished, Hoarah Loux will stand still for a couple seconds, allowing you to damage him.
His most difficult moves to manage are the Stomp and Earthshaker. You can dodge roll through the normal Stomp, so long as your timing is solid. For the Earthshaker, all you need to do is get close to him as he charges it up, jump the first slam, and then do a jump attack during the second. That prevents you from getting damaged, and allows you to get a hit or two in.
Your reward for defeating Hoarah Loux, Warrior
Once Hoarah Loux is defeated, you earn 300,000 Runes and the Remembrance of Hoarah Loux. The Remembrance can be traded in for the Axe of Godfrey, a STR/DEX Colossal Axe, or the Ash of War: Hoarah Loux’s Earthshaker.
